Rilka's letters to a young poet were translated into prose for the first time. He was writing in a hurry as well as also being travelling often at the time. Rilka himself was only 27, and he hadn't been asked for this advice by his fellow soldiers. But what he then proceeded to do, perhaps without meaning to, was sharing views about how to live a life.

Joanna Macy is an environmental activist, author, a scholar of Buddhism, general systems theory, and deep ecology. She has written and co-authored many books, including translating much of Rilke’s work
