If inflation hadn't happened, they would have been able to continue to afford that. It's hard to properly quantify how absolutely upside down and broken economically this thing was - there was nothing you could do. And so i think that rome would have overcome all those other problems that people attribute its fall to. If inflation hadn't been running away, e could oud have coped with all the other stuff. The money worked. But the money quit working.
