The Rise of Online Brokerage in the Late 90s
I was getting a little bit burned out on the business, but also taking stock of the fact that many other people were becoming very, very successful at West. So I felt that there were all kinds of problems that I could solve using the techniques that I had learned in quantitative finance. Online brokerage had just come onto the scene in the late 90s. In a matter of two years, it had gone from nothing to around 40% market share of all retail equity trades.
