By the 70s, transsexual medicine had reached a new scale with academic hospitals and private clinics making transition and gender confirmation surgery more widely available than ever before. Then in 1980, there's a new edition of the DSM, which for the first time includes an entry on gender identity disorder. And that gives trans medicine access, however, tenuous to to insurance coverage. Not long before that, in 1973, homosexuality was declassified as a psychiatric disorder by the American Psychological Association.
