The Importance of Reflection in War
There's just such sensory overload that all you can do is live in this extremely acute present. In some ways, artistically, that lack of reflectiveness strikes me almost as a device to convey the mindset of someone undergoing an intense experience. He doesn't really go into detail as to what that new experience entails. But he does mention that there was some sort of transcendence that he achieved because of the sheer sensory input of getting shelled, getting shot at and getting into grenade fights with other bands of enemy soldiers. And I would be interested to know some of the details of that transcendent experience. So yeah, there's that first bit of the war in terms of this book's narrative
