Quantum Mechanics - Exponentiality

When quantum mechanics was written down by Heisenberg and Trottinger in the mid-1920s, it immediately had this feature that says that for each particle that you add to a system, you have to multiply the number of parameters. So just for a thousand particles, which is a rather small system, that's already more parameters than you could explicitly write down if you use the entire observable universe as your notepaper.
