What's the Thing in Us for Kant?

Kant's view is that human beings, humanity as a whole, strives towards moral and political perfection. So I'm motivated to sort of the inch humanity, you know, if I could just move humanity forward one little step. And it does hurt, it does hurt our motivation when, when it looks like things are moving back, right?
