The History of Union Square

Union Square is where all of the major north-south highways or roads running the length of Manhattan Island intersected. It was around Union Square that the city's entertainment district and theater district began to coalesce along Broadway. In an age long before any zoning laws existed, there was nothing stopping a hotel or a factory from opening up right next to your newly built mansion on Broadway.
