An existential catastrophe is the destruction of humanity's long-term potential. The value of humanity at any point in time might be greatly reduced, perhaps even to be worse than nothing under a totalitarian regime. So that's how I think about it in terms of potential. And what happens if you have extinction is that instead of being able to achieve these great things, the set of possible outcomes that we could achieve is just one. There's no choice left to make. It destroys not just what we are, but what we could be.
