The History of Gladiators
Around 8000 people died in arenas per year across the Roman empire. Gladiators were part of a lowly class called infamies. This was someone who wasn't given the right or dignity of a Roman citizen. In 73 BCE, an enslaved threshing gladiator called Spartacus had led a rebellion with around 70 other people and he'd escaped from his gladiator school. The Roman government desperately wanted to avoid this happening again, so they improved living conditions for gladiators. They also kept their gladiators separated from each other in their own rooms because they didn't spend free time plotting together.
