Prohibition mingled with people's liberation movements all over the world in the late 19th, early 20th centuries. Among Europeans, alcohol became a self reinforcing moral justification for imperialism. You can drain the system of money if you refuse to buy the poison. And if you stop taking the poison, you'll sober up and become more capable of revolution and ultimately self government.
