In 17 98, an engineer in southern england begins to recognize distinctive rock units with distinctive assemblages of fossils. He realizes that you can use the this er the successions of rocks and fossils, in order to match up rocks in different areas. In 18 15, he publishes his map, his geological map, that covers england, wales and a bit of scotland. Now that's kind of that sets the scene in then what happens in the next generation is that you get geologists who are working on particular packages of rock,. That begin to put together the geological column in the form that we understand it today.
