The Hopeful Universalist
I've always had a problem with the notion that what you're hoping is God will turn out to be as nice as you would be if you were God. Balthazar was not at all a hopeful universalist. He was a straightforward universal who simply was trying to stay on the right side of the congregation for the propagation of the faith, whatever they call it. I'm not one of those who's an uncritical reader of CS Lewis but when he was good, he was very, very good.
