The History of the First Amendment
The First Amendment has this relatively categorical language, Congress shall make no law. But that language becomes part of the Constitution in 1791. And then just a few years later, you have the Sedition Acts and people are being thrown in prison for criticizing the government. The Supreme Court started to say there's a First Amendment problem with some laws after World War I.
