Are We Going to Jump in or Not?
Mankind pulled back from the abyss, they managed to avoid mutual nuclear annihilation. They also managed in the Western world to avoid going down this totalitarian route and becoming like Soviets or Nazis. So I think a lot of it is that while the official ideology was one where it seemed like socialism was the way to the go, common sense got in the way.
