Huey Newton and Bobby Seals' desire to get the toughest, baddest dudes they could find into the Black Panthers meant that there was very little vetting of new members. Frequently chapters were full of violent criminals along the spectrum of reform all the way from not at all to getting there. Eldridge Cleaver thought of himself as an intellectual and it was him who would take the organization out of the ghettos by building bridges to radical sheet white liberals.
