There was a big dispute about the use of so-called spectral evidence in Bishop's trial. The devil can only conjure apparitions of those who are loyal to him, said some people. So if someone appeared as a specter, it was a sign of their guilt because you had to have professed loyalty to Satan for him to create an illusion of your image.
