The Temple Is a Bol of the People and Their Relationship to the Lord
Haggai and zachariah are two witnesses bearing testimony to the word of the lord to the people. Zachariah's first message is a warning to repent. The temple will be of little worth if the hearts of the people worshipping within it have not returned to the lord. It was imperative that the people took this lesson to heart if they were not to suffer the same fate themselves.
