The Importance of Apostles in the Christian Movement

In a minimalist scenario, the apostles would have known there would have been a target on their back for continuing with the group. They're more of the public speakers of the group like Martin Luther King Jr is a public speaker. Their motivation, their sincerity in in the message itself being preached that Jesus rose from the dead would make the most sense of their continued participation in such a dangerous occupation.
