The fathers of utilitarianism were famously quite weird. The idea that they should be really influential in public policy is somewhat alarming. Bentham arranged to have himself stuffed when he was dead so that he could continue to preside over committee meetings at University College London. Mill was deliberately raised so that he did not play with other children. Are these the intellectual leaders we want to be guided by? I think not.
