As the compost pile breaks down or if you prefer, get eaten, it goes through many changes. Heat mesophilic microbes grow and survive at temperatures between 50 degrees and 113 degrees Fahrenheit. The optimal temperature for thermophilic microbes is between 113 and up to 170 degrees Fahrenheit. If this doesn't happen, last year's seeds are all going to pop straight out.
