Don McLean's father died in 1961, ten years before American Pie comes out. That has led people to speculate that for the 10 years, we've been on our own line. There is a persistent rumor that he wrote these verses at a bar in Saratoga Springs and then got so drunk that he left them behind. And American Pie wouldn't exist as we know it today at least, had a kindly student not scooped up these missing notes, and returned them to Don the next day.
