There were professional bankers in the Roman world called Argentarii or after the second century CE, Numularii. They accepted deposits of money and they provided interest to depositors. The Romans didn't have a concept of productive loans in the way that we do today. Their money could be put to use for productive purposes throughout the broader economy.
