How Would a Classical Realist Look at the Peloponnesian War?

The Peloponnesian War which took place about 2,500 years ago was a 27 year conflict between two predominant city-states Athens and Sparta. A historian although he didn't really call himself that called Thucydides who was a Athenian general who was exiled because of a failure in his generalship during the war gave him the opportunity to study the war closely. He made a tremendous effort to try and leave what he's called something for all time a description of the war that would implicitly provide lessons about domestic and international politics. We can derive many many timeless lessons from this ancient conflict that he provided for us so it's packaged as a straight history.
