The Importance of Perfection in Enlightenment Thinking
There's this idea of not being subject to the unimposed order. And why would that be? Well, it's kind of natural to enlightenment thinking to have that ideal because a received rule is always going to be one according to the enlightenment thinker. So you can't find perfection in fulfilling some natural teleology. You have to find a way of conjuring its good out of its own form. The scientific revolution gives us an idea of external reality as being irrational. Even what's natural in myself is irrational. So reason has to achieve its dignity. It has to be independent of the natural.
