Is Instrumentalism Used as an Explanation?
Instrumentalism is a widespread way of thinking about physics at least, as far as I can tell in my field. And probably it's very, I mean, I can guess it's a thing that affects all sciences. It starts from a good intention but then becomes a barrier to making progress and asking the right questions. For example, there are some questions in the foundations of quantum theory that have been asked now for more than a century. This has created a huge amount of confusion. So this is an example where this kind of thinking isn't helpful.
