The History of Itaewon
Chongmin Min-a Lee is a musicologist at Duke University. In the 1980s, Itaewon became somewhat self-segregated with mostly white establishments to the north and black establishments to the south. Some bars on clubs on either side adopted themes like you could have a country western bar or a classic rock bar. Moon Knight was one of these themed clubs. It was a spot for black GIs to listen to music from the states like hip hop, rap, and new Jack swing.
