During this phase, according to ericson, children are going through two different stages, autonomy versus shame and doubt. The biggest interference at this stage with the attachment relationship is parents who are overly permissive or overly strict. Pre schoolers have difficulty discerning the truth from fiction, dreams and imagination. This is one of our challenges. Again, we know there's no monsters in the closet or under the bed, but children don't. It can be frustrating sometimes when children do things that you're not expecting, or they start exploring, when they're not supposed to.
