Russian Military Modernization

i remember you saying that the russians had modernized their armed forces since the georgian war, taking drawing lessons from that military experience. And they seem to have performed now fairly effectively in syria, though they were really ground force is deployed in syria. So i was wondering how far how that am that story about russian military modernization, how does that square with russia's military performance in yew crane?
