The Impact of Human Rights on US-India Relations

The situation facing minorities in India has become much more difficult today than it was say 20 years ago. I think the approach that the administration has taken is that if we have an open conversation about these issues, we are unlikely to be able to persuade India to adopt a different approach. The effort has been to talk to Indian leaders privately while continuing to call out what we see as egregious violations. So we've been truthful in terms of our perception of what the realities on the ground are. But we have been much more subtle in our public discourse with respect to how we approach these with India.
