The Impact of the ICJ's Decision on Climate Change
The decision hopefully will clarify what states are required to do in terms of mitigating their greenhouse gas emissions. Though this is just an advisory opinion, it would provide a basis for future contentious litigation. What's required from one state is not necessarily the same as what's required from another. The ICJ opinion is expected to take about 12 to 16 months.
