The hapsburgs are the family that very unexpectedly end up a rising to incredible power and really towering over the entire history of europe, in a way. So as i said, this area, most of it was technically within the borders of the holy roman empire - which is neither holy nor roman nor an empire. And these holy roman emperors were not hereditary. It wasn't passed down from father to son. Rather, each emperor was elected, and there was a certain selection of important princes,. who had the power to vote in these elections for the emperor.
