Neo-Platonists are aware of attacks by long dead opponents of Plato, such as the Aristotelian philosophers' trade-o. They quote these criticisms and rebut them forcefully, but ironically, they often use Aristotellian concepts in doing so. Damascus remarks that the soul is thus a substance that acquires the accidents of being alive and dead.
