The Myth of St. Patrick
The latter day myths about Patrick don't have a historical basis in Patrick himself, but they do go fairly far back in the legend of Patrick. The idea that he drove the snakes out is just a symbolic way of saying he drove the evil out of Ireland. And the idea that he used the shamrock, the three-leaf clover to explain the Christian Trinity isn't true either. But that's actually more plausible. It's a sort of thing that Patrick might have done that any good missionary might have done. Regardless, the movement to have him recognized as a saint gains momentum and by the end of the seventh century, he is widely accepted as the nation's patron saint. His feast
