How to Get Your Hands Dirty in a PHD Course?

There is a lot to be said for just diving in and trying get one's hands dirty. I've never had a ph d student fail the whole time. If after a while you're not getting anywhere, find a different problem. And if don't give up, complete but get in there and playa and you will learn things. Even if it turns out you're wrong, start out in a positive frame of mind that you can puzzle out your mistake. It may not be something going on here i'm not sure what it is - but this doesn't mean i'm not in my comfort zone'
