The Relationship Between the Master and the Slave
Master and servant was predicated on the idea of mutuality. The concept has been distorted over time to exclude people from certain labour law rights. Lawmakers now use terms in foreign workmen as they want to get away from an inequality between parties, says Professor John Boulden. It's also useful to see how despite abandoning the language of masculine servant there are certain assumptions that the courts have about what is legitimate for employers to do.
