Pompey was not old enough to be considered for a triumph, nor had he served in any public office at all. He refused to disband his army until his request was granted by the then-consul Sulla. It is from this impetuousness that so hung the sarcastic title of Magnus on Pompey: "Magnificent" The first in a long line of would-be despots arose after Sulla's death - Lepidus.
