The Birtz Society and the First Presidency
In 1962 President McKay considered putting Benson in the first presidency. The idea was so far along that members of the corner of the 12 were shocked when it was given to an elder and Tanner instead. N.E.L. then Tanner was a no name in church politics at that point nobody knew who Tanner was. He goes on to serve in multiple first presences with McKay, with Joseph Smith with Harold B. Lee and Spencer Kimball. And he's a brilliant financial administrator, not a great speaker public speaker, but a terrific person balancing the church's finances and trying to figure out where to invest and so forth.
