There was a happy meeting point between the two different styles. Indian classical music is based on improvisation upon very strict forms of melody and rhythm. Similarly with earlier opera, there was a lot more given to the soloist to improvise on as well. The thing that struck us all the way along the process has been the similarities rather than the differences actually. And also in a sense the harmonic language because there's a truthfulness and a beauty in the early harmonic language that Monteverdi uses.
