In the 20s and 30s, there was a push to socialize electric power in the United States. The communists thought that capitalists would never be able to build out the electrical power industry because it required too much central control. So they were very strong advocates of government coming in and taking over the power industry. But ironically, this created so much demand for power plants that they later had to create coal-fired power plants just to keep up with demand.
