The Burmese Identity in the 19th Century

When exactly did the burmese identity go from being a national category to an ethnic category? Excellent question. A lot of literature points to the fact that colonization by the british and the japanese invasion of burma during the 19 forties had a profound impact on the identity of the Burmese people. We were just trying to understand how decolonization would, in your opinion, amplify these divisions. And so ther theyre from the very beginning to the question about, at what point is it a national identity versus an ethnic identity.
