The Germans Make the First Move
It's worth bearing in mind that this is a period of time where the Victorian, romantic, sentimental Charles Dickens idea of Christmas is very prevalent. Whatever the motivation, it's the Germans who make the first move. After all, they are the invaders, so it's up to them to suggest a ceasefire. One account of what happened comes from private Leslie Wahlkington of the Queen's Westminster Rifles based near Chappelle-Darmancier Northern France. In an interview recorded by the Imperial War Museum in 1985, he recalls how he spent his Christmas Eve exchanging songs and banter with the enemy,. 300 yards across No Man's Land.
