A Brief History of Anastasius

Anastasius had less to fear from men in high places than either Zeno or Leo. He was generally disliked by the official classes because their pockets suffered as a result. The emperor abolished the hated quinquennial tax on commerce, also known as the Chryssagrion. We'll leave Anastasius there for now, enjoying the glow of his popularity. Although it will last for a decade, or perhaps more, there are still plenty more invasions and rebellions to get through.
