Foucault on the Origins of Discipline

The old system was becoming a little more dangerous for the sovereign. Foucault puts this emphasis on the ways in which things could go wrong and the crowd might end up sympathizing with the person who was being publicly tortured and executed. It's when it goes underground that you really get a much nicer and safer form of control.
