The Northern Lights and Their Southern Hemisphere Cousins

Auroras are produced when energetic particles from space, like electrons, come raining down into the atmosphere. The sun is sending a stream of plasma called the solar wind that flows past the earth. And some of those particles get funneled down towards the polar regions and cause auroras. There may be different things, other things that are pushing the electrons.
