There are some people who sincerely believe that the job of a liberal public intellectual is to offer arguments and defenses that best help the Democratic Party do things. Similarly, there are people on the right who think that the role of the conservative public intellectual is to provide the best arguments as possible to advance the GOP agenda. I don't think there's anything inherently bad faith or dishonest or corrupt about that stuff; I just think that it's mistaken in a certain fundamental way when taken to some extremes.
