By 1922, only two years in, there were 5,000 speakeasies in New York. The rich could afford alcohol whereas the poor who were buying it off the street could literally be drinking moonshine. And as Greg said, black and immigrant communities would get arrested for large-scale arrests on the streets. They would get jailed and police also violence then. But this is where we get the idea of bootleggers: We get the idea that if you're not a big drinker, you don't need to go out at all.
