CHAPTER

Is There a Monkey Trap?

In Asia, there's a kind of monkey trap where they use a coconut that's hollowed out with just a slit in the bottom. Who's keeping that monkey imprisoned? Nothing but the force of its own clinging. All it has to do is open its hand, slip out and be free. I can do that. Freedom is not far off. It's right here. Of course sometimes we think we're in an open free state. Think we're water flowing along. But when we look more carefully we find it's slush. Because attachments or identification or cling can be very subtle. Sometimes we don't know it's there.
