The Venetians were dominant in the Mediterranean for 200 years. But they couldn't overthrow them because their navy was based on salt trade. Northern countries had an abundant supply of fish but a shortage of salt. Sweden actually tried to buy an island to fix this and it didn't even cover the cost of the purchase.
