The Importance of Priorities in Government
When you're ahead of any department, so you're the secretary state of a department, you have a set of priorities. So it's not just me saying to them, can you help me with my priority? But getting the priorities right for everyone working together can be tough. Even though the government would underline, they have spent £350 million since 2019 on addressing knife crime. Some people think I'm missing something crucial here that even if we manage to scale up all the things that work, it might not solve the problem. We mustn't get completely distracted from the deeper causes of violence.
